Second Night - Down, But feeling better

10 June 2009
So i headed back to Ultimate Bet to try and hit another satalite. I know, i know, im still playing above my bankroll, but i couldn't get anywhere grinding in the 1c, 2c tables because my aggressive play never payed off, and if i played too tight, i'd end up loosing to some guy playing Ace high to the river - calling all my raises and re-raises to catch his out on the river, and that sucks. Im just gonna continue with the satalites and the low buy-in tournaments until i have at least $100, then i will turn to the cash tables.

Anyway, on Ultimate Bet they have these 'Step' tournaments. If you've never seen this, here is the DL. You enter at any step (1-10) as long as you pay the buy in. Step 1 buy in being 0.10 and step 10 buy in being something in the range of $100, but, if you Win a Step 1 - you get the buy in for step 2 and so on and so on. Around Step 10 there is some cash pay out and entrance to bigger satalites. Now i know what you're thinking, big waste of time. But i found the games i played last night, competative and learning. People protected their stacks as iff it were a $100 buy in, so it was a lot easier to put my new aggressive technique into play. At the start of the tourney i was in last position, so i just sat back. I wanted to see how everyone was playing, and they were mostley playing super tight. There were a few loose cannons on the table, and they were easy to spot, but for the majority, they were tight. I let a few hands go by and then got Pocket Jacks. I raised the blinds and got a fold around the table to one of the loose players. He called the bet. Flop came down Q,Q,10. Dang. He probably limped in with a K,10 or possibly something with a Q. I bet out to see where i was. He called. I don't know what the perfect play is here, maybe i didn't raise him enough to get him off his hand. Maybe he had aces and was slow playing them. Maybe he had Q,10 and was slow playing that. But we saw the next card. Jack. Awesome. Now, the aggressive play is to bet, and bet high. He's an aggressive player, even if he had a 10 and low kicker, he'd still probably call. Hopefully i'd get a read off him if he had the Queen, cause he'd re-raise it, knowing i was pretty pot comitted at this point. He didn't. He called. I dont think he has the queen. Next card, 10. Dammit. I made full house, but if he's holding Aces, Kings or that Queen, He's made the better one. I decided im going all in - but not straight away. I bet out a small bet - one half the pot. He raises it up and i instacall all-in. He sits and waits, and then folds. WTF? I couldn't believe it. This guy (or girl) leaves him self with about 540 chips and i stack up nicely. I don't know if i played the hand well or if he played it badley. I hadn't been involved with a hand at that point, so maybe he thought i was bluffing.

Anyway, the game wore on, i knocked out three players in total, two at once in a hand where i slow played the straight i flopped and they both went all the way with Ace High. I eneded up heads up with a big stack and i think the other guy pretty much gave up (because first and second both pay out Step2 buy in). I played step 2 the same way, tight but aggressive, i stole a few blinds in the early stages whilst people were playing super tight and then just waited. I knocked out one big stack and played well ( i thought ). At the same time i was playing another 180 player tournament, but my concerntration was on the step tournament and i ended up busting out at 24 in that. I won the step 2 and decided to save step 3 for tonight, maybe even a step 4.

I may still be down money wise in my adventures so far, but i was on game last night and feel much better than i did the night before. I played well, if i do say so myself, and the step tournaments are helping me out.

I also picked up Harrington on HoldEm after they were reccomended. I'd like to say that i wont play till i read them, but i can do both at the same time, slowley adjusting my game every day.

Till tomorrow..........

First night - No Wins

9 June 2009
So last night i played over at Ultimate Bet. I was going to play at Poker stars, but i needed my passport to confirm my age and i couldn't be bothered to dig it out. PKR couldnt confirm my Visa card, so ultimate bet was the resort. I deposited $25 dollars and got 111% on top of that using one of their promotions, but i have to wait for that to be added on, so my bankroll started at $25.

The first thing i did was a stupid play, i entered a $1 SNG turbo tournament. It was above my bankroll, and i knew that going in, but straight away i wanted some action, and said to myself, "I can stand to loose this dollar". I decided that i would play a little more aggresive than i usually would, just to see if i had learnt anything from Brunson's Super System and all his wise words on aggresive play. I sat tight for about ten hands and then when i was under the gun i hit A-K off suit. I bet out 40 chips and it was folded round to the BB who called. I had been taking note of his play and he seemed to be a pretty tight player, so i knew he must have something. The flop came 10-J-A. I paired my Ace, but had he made something. He checked to me so i put him on middle pair. I raised, he folded. I didn't want to slow play it, maybe if i had, i might have gotten more money out of him, but i still walked away with the pot, and thats all that counts at that moment.

I continued to fold my hole cards for the next few hands, i was waiting for some premium hands to play with. After about 40 minutes, i had seen three flops, and i had won them all. The player in front of me was low on Chips and seemed to be going on tilt a bit, getting a little loose, and it was working for him, he was eating up the blinds from everyone, including myself. I waited for the right hand - he raised, i re-raised, it was folded around and now it was down to him. There was no point in just calling, he'd have to re-raise and go all it. He did, and the card were turned. I had ladies and he had seven, four off suit. After a seven, three, six rainbow came off the flop, i thought that i might have made a bad play, but the turn and river didn't help him and he was out.

Takijng that big pot put me in chip lead and i sat back a bit and let the other plays amongst themselves for a bit, then i noticed that they all were playing super tight, so i started stealing blinds. I'd raise and everyone would fold. This worked for 90% of the time, and when i got called, it was worth just seeing the flop. I'd represent a strong hand pre-flop and post, and again, it started paying off, so i continued to do this.

One of the other players let the blinds eat him up and he went all in on five, six suited. I called with Jack, nine. Cards came down and i paired my Jack to knock another player out. I was now at a minimum of 1500 chips aahead of the rest. I could have sat back, waited for hands, i should have done that, but i didn't. I should have switched styles back to Super Tight, but i didn't. i liked what this aggressive play had done for me and soon i was playing hands that i had no buisness playing, crazy hands, ones that i wont even mention here because they would probably make you sick.

Soon enough i was on tilt, grasping to steal blinds, taking gut shots at insane draws that i never made. Before long i was out - 4th place. No good.

I hit the cash tables to try and make back the lost entry fee, but i was so annoyed at myself for pissing away the SNG i ended up paying stupid again at the cash table. I lost about another dollar. After that i knew if i carried on playing i'd piss it all away.

Today, whilst at work i played a Satalite and played good, but just lost out to people drawing cards. One guy called all my raises with a 3,5 off suit and drew a straight on the river. I had pocket nines.

My last hand i had pocket nines again and after two re-raises a guy went all in - he fliped 10-J. Flop came nine, Jack, Jack. Bollocks. I was out. My bankroll is now down to $20. Im going to play micro stakes to try and build on it for a bit now.

Finding Phil

8 June 2009
Im 26. Im from London, UK. I like Poker. What more do you need to know?

Ok. The truth is, i never got into playing poker much until late 2006. Sure, i used to watch it on TV alot, late night poker on Channel 5 was pretty much the only poker TV we got in England at that point, but i had never really played much, any in fact.

For Christmas in 2006 i got a Poker table and chip set, and in a single night at home with friends, i became pretty hooked, pretty quick. Of course, NLHE was the game of choice as it was the easiest for everyone to learn, and it is a game that we continue to play to this day. Every now and then, we will have everyone up, the chips will come out and we will turn and burn for a few hours. We dont gamble a lot - anyhting between £10 and £30 in a night is nothing unusual, and we keep the blinds low and fixed at around 5p / 10p. This way, everyone can enjoy and realax without loosing a ton of cash. We have tried mini tournaments before, but people got bored quickly.

In 2007, we continued to play regualy, and we even all went out to other Live games in local pubs. No one won Big, but it became more of a social thing.

In 2008 it stopped. For a long time we stopped playing, occasionally a game would go down, but it would be months in between before we would play again. I think others may have just been bored with it all.

So 2009 rolls around. To date we have had one game, but i feel like i want to get back into playing reguarly, online and Live. The reason for this? I don't know, i enjoy playing.

So, whilst on holiday in Florida i picked up a copy of Doyle Brunso's Super System I and Phil Helmuth's  "Play Poker like the Pro's".

Ive read most of Super System and i really like it. Although maybe not the most up to date, it gives really good solid foundations for Aggresive play, im currrently a really slow player and don't really play aggresive at all and i want to change that. Im two chapter's into Hellmuth's and i love it already. I love the fact that its got me raising pre-flop in Limit poker alot more with hands that i would usually slow play.

Anyway, i wanted to set a goal, for now, as a poker player. That goal is - to sit across from Helmuth at a poker table. The fact is, i love the man. He has such a passion for playing the game and playing it right. Sure, he has a temper and a big ego, but in my mind its rightfully erned. He is a good player most of the time, no just at No-Limit, but at all the other games. He's also a very good speaker, and when he talks about the game, he does so with such fire and passion. I like that in a person. It makes me want to spend some time with them. So, for now. Sitting across from Phil is the goal. I know that he plays most major tournaments, so i just need to get my bankroll to that, and then, hopefully, get on a table with him.

Im also keeping this for myself, to log everything i do, and hopefully gain enough interest to get some tips back from other players.

So for now, my Bank is $0 or £0, im gonna make a deposit over at Pokerstars and start playing there.
